Short answer: crafting is optional but powerful. You can craft from your backpack or from stations. Recipes unlock either by finding them in the world or by experimenting — put ingredients in the slots, and if the combination is valid you craft the item and learn the recipe at the same time.
Crafting is optional on purpose
The first thing Mudtek says about crafting is that you do not have to engage with it. That framing shapes every other decision in the system.
Official Design post, 20 January 2026
“In Dimraeth, crafting is designed to be optional, but highly impactful for players who want to lean into it. Depending on how much you engage, crafting can either sit in the background and simply keep your character fed, or it can become a serious power lever that you invest into over time.”

Mudtek later spells out the escape hatch for players who skip it entirely.
Official Design post, 20 January 2026
“Most, if not all, essential items can be purchased from NPCs at a premium. You may also gain access to some of those supplies later than you would if you were crafting them yourself, but you won't be hard-blocked. In Dimraeth there are multiple paths to power.”

That is a specific and checkable promise. Crafting changes your timing, consistency and convenience rather than being a gate. If you buy instead of craft, you pay more and get some things later. The studio’s own summary of what crafting buys you is worth keeping in mind when deciding how much to invest: it is a convenience lever first and a power lever second.
Two ways to learn a recipe
Recipes come from exploration or from experimentation. The experimental route is the unusual one: valid inputs let you craft an item and unlock its recipe simultaneously.
Official Design post, 20 January 2026
“Recipe discovery comes in two ways. The first is classic exploration: you can find recipes out in the world. The second is more experimental and player-driven. In the crafting tab, you can place items into crafting slots, and if your inputs match a valid recipe, you can craft the item and unlock that recipe at the same time.”
“Once a recipe is unlocked, you can craft it directly from the recipe list for convenience, without needing to remember the exact combination every time.”
Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 20 January 2026
The important detail is what happens after a successful experiment. The recipe is permanently unlocked. You are not repeating the guesswork each time; once learned, it moves to a recipe list you can craft from directly. Experimentation is a one-time cost per recipe, not an ongoing minigame.
Mudtek is explicit that both player types are being served.
Official Design post, 20 January 2026
“The intention here is to support both types of crafting players: the ones who want to hunt recipes through exploration, and the ones who enjoy tinkering and discovering recipes naturally by experimenting with ingredients.”

Backpack or station
Crafting happens in two places, and the distinction matters for planning.
| Location | What it handles | Confirmed by |
|---|---|---|
| Backpack | Direct crafting without a station | Design post, 20 Jan 2026 |
| Stations | Recipes that require a specific station | Design post, 20 Jan 2026 |
| CAMPFIRE | A crafting station, shown in the interface | Official store screenshot |
Mudtek’s wording is that “many recipes require specific stations to craft, so as you build out more stations, you expand what you’re capable of producing.” The logic runs in one direction: stations are strictly additive. Building one never takes capability away, it only widens your recipe pool.
An official screenshot confirms one station by name — the interface panel is titled CAMPFIRE, and it appears beside a CARGO inventory showing materials on one side and a finished item on the other. The achievement list names three more.
Official Achievement description
Workshop — “Build a Workbench, an Alchemy Table and a Woodfire Stove.”
Source: Steam achievement page · verified 16 September 2026
That single achievement description is the only official naming of crafting stations, and it gives you a concrete three-station goal: a Workbench, an Alchemy Table and a Woodfire Stove. Its 0.3% completion rate says almost nobody has built all three.
The Crafting Codex
The Codex is the system that makes experimentation tractable rather than a brute-force search.
Official Design post, 20 January 2026
“You can see how many undiscovered recipes a given item is involved in, and if you've already unlocked a recipe, you can also see what other items are part of that recipe chain. For example, you might notice an ingredient like tender berries still has undiscovered recipes tied to it, which is a simple hint that there's more you can do with it than just your current potion pipeline.”
“The goal of the Crafting Codex is to give crafting-focused players a light set of breadcrumbs to follow, while also letting you track your progress as you move toward unlocking every recipe in the game.”
Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 20 January 2026
Read that as two distinct functions.
| Codex function | What you see | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Undiscovered count | How many recipes an item feeds into | Tells you which ingredients are worth hoarding |
| Recipe chain | Other items in a chain you have unlocked | Shows what a recipe depends on |
| Overall progress | Movement toward unlocking every recipe | Long-term completion tracking |
The tender berries example is worth noting because it is the only named ingredient in Mudtek’s crafting explanation. The studio uses it to illustrate that an ingredient you already farm for potions may have uses you have not found yet. That is the Codex in one sentence: it tells you where the unexplored edges are.
The Codex also appears in the game’s top navigation bar, which an official screenshot shows as CHARACTER / CRAFTING CODEX / QUEST / MAP / SPELL / SOCIAL / SETTINGS — so it is a first-class menu rather than a sub-tab of the inventory.
Reading the crafting screen
An official screenshot shows the crafting panel in use, and several details are legible.
| On screen | What it tells us |
|---|---|
| CAMPFIRE | The crafting station currently open |
| CARGO | The inventory panel it sits beside |
| 389/510 | Inventory weight, with a hard cap |
| 1889 | Currency held |
| Flax Rope | A crafted or gathered material |
| Lesser Health / Concentration / Stamina Throwflask | Consumable flask types |
| Fried Chicken Egg | A cooking ingredient |
| Burrow Broth | A finished food item |
| XP: 1061 | Experience gained in the session |
Two structural points come out of that list. First, the crafting interface sits alongside the inventory rather than replacing it, so materials and outputs are visible at once. Second, ingredients divide into at least three families — plant materials like Flax Rope, animal products like the egg, and crafted flasks — which is consistent with Mudtek describing agriculture, animal pens and gathering as parallel supply lines.
Achievements that track crafting
Crafting has a small but revealing achievement footprint.
| Milestone | Achievement | Description | Completion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Craft anything | MacGyvered It | Craft an item for the first time | 100.0% |
| Build a station | Tools of the Trade | Build your first crafting station | 56.2% |
| Build all three core stations | Workshop | Build a Workbench, an Alchemy Table and a Woodfire Stove | 0.3% |
The numbers describe a steep funnel. 100% of tracked players have crafted at least once, which means the game walks everyone through it — the first crafting action is effectively unmissable. 56.2% have built a crafting station, so roughly half of players commit to the infrastructure. 0.3% have built all three named stations.
That 56.2% figure is the most useful planning number on the page. Building your first station is a mid-game milestone on the same tier as reaching level 5 (47.7%) and upgrading a combat item (46.3%). It is a normal thing to do, not a specialist detour.
What this means for your save. The achievement distribution says most players engage with crafting lightly and stop before the full station set. If you intend to push into the systems that depend on it — the food buffs and potion stockpiles that matter late — expect to be in a minority, and plan the station build as a deliberate project rather than something you pick up passively.
Crafting’s place in the loop
Mudtek describes the crafting loop as a cycle between exploration and preparation.
Official Design post, 20 January 2026
“A common loop here is simple: you scout a boss that leans heavily into a specific damage type, then you come back to base and prep for it. You check your Crafting Codex for what you've unlocked, cook the meal that pushes you into the right stat or resistance breakpoint, eat, restock, and head back out.”
Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 20 January 2026
Crafting, then, is the machinery behind preparation. The output that matters most is not the item itself but the buff, the potion or the resistance breakpoint you carry into a fight. The next three pages in this group cover those outputs directly: cooking covers the long-duration buffs, potions covers combat recovery and throwables, and farming covers where the ingredients come from.
