Short answer: the Wildwood is a forest of many small kingdoms, each ruled by a Forest King — ancient nature spirits that may be dryads, treants or stranger things. All of them answer to Ceres, the nature god. It was expanded for Early Access and borders Earlwood Village.
A forest that belongs to nobody
The Wildwood’s defining trait is political. It is a large forest between two powers that neither controls.
Official Devlog, 13 June 2025
“The Wildwood that surrounds Earlwood is no ordinary forest. Though it lies at the border of the vast Eternal Forest, it is not ruled by Elves, nor claimed by the Kingdom of Aldoria.”
“Here, each stretch of forest is its own domain. The Wildwood is a fractured land of many small kingdoms, each ruled by a Forest King — ancient spirits of nature, be they Dryads, Treants, or stranger powers still. Though divided, they are bound by one law: the will of Ceres, the nature god whose laws shape all life beneath the canopy.”

Read carefully, that passage establishes four separate things.
It is not elven territory. Despite bordering the Eternal Forest, the Wildwood is explicitly not ruled by Elves — a distinction that matters because a player would reasonably assume otherwise.
It is not human territory either. Aldoria makes no claim on it.
It is internally divided. “Many small kingdoms” means there is no single Wildwood authority to negotiate with or defeat.
It has a common law. Ceres binds all of them, which is the one thing that makes the Wildwood coherent as a region rather than a random collection of domains.
The phrase “ancient spirits of nature, be they Dryads, Treants, or stranger powers still” is deliberately open-ended. It tells you a Forest King need not be a single creature type, which is useful context for interpreting the achievement list.
Ceres and the nature god
Ceres is the only deity named in any official Dimraeth source, and her role is defined by scope rather than personality.

Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 13 June 2025
“All life beneath the canopy” is a broad jurisdiction, and it makes Ceres the forest’s actual sovereign in a way none of the Forest Kings are. The kings rule domains; Ceres sets the rules those domains operate under.
We note that the name Ceres is also that of a Roman goddess of agriculture, and that Mudtek’s inspiration for the peninsula came partly from real-world locations. Whether the naming is a deliberate classical reference is not something the studio has said, so we record the name and her described role without reading further into it.
The Forest Kings and the boss list
The achievement list names two entities that plausibly sit in the Forest King category. One connection is strongly implied by an achievement title; neither is labelled as a Forest King by Mudtek.
| Achievement | Official description | Completion | Forest King link |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Hart of the Forest | Defeat Aelwynor | 0.1% | Implied by the title only |
| Uprooted | Defeat Woldroot the Path Guardian | 0.2% | Titled “Path Guardian” |
| Timber! | Complete The Corrupted Treant Quest | 13.9% | A treant is a Forest King type |
The reasoning for each is different, and it is worth being precise about it.
Aelwynor carries no title in the achievement description — it reads simply “Defeat Aelwynor”. The connecting evidence is the achievement’s own name, The Hart of the Forest. “Hart” is a term for a stag, and a forest-dwelling stag spirit would fit Mudtek’s description of Forest Kings as nature spirits. That is an inference from a title, not a statement, and we mark it as such.
Woldroot the Path Guardian has a title but it is “Path Guardian”, not Forest King. Its name suggests something rooted, and a treant is one of the Forest King types Mudtek lists.
The Corrupted Treant is the strongest of the three, because Mudtek names treants explicitly as a possible Forest King. But the quest title says the treant is corrupted, and the studio has not said whether a corrupted treant still counts as a Forest King or has become something else.
Note Inference, not fact
Mudtek has never published a list of Forest Kings. The three entries above are the only boss entities that could plausibly belong to that category, and the association for Aelwynor rests entirely on an achievement title.
We present the connection as an inference so you can weight it accordingly. It is not a claim that Mudtek has made.

Basilton, the Wildwood Golem
The Wildwood has one character confirmed by an in-game name plate, and he is not what the region’s lore would lead you to expect.
Official Interface read
An official Steam store screenshot shows a dialogue screen. The two-line name plate reads “BASILTON” above “The Wildwood Golem”, and the spoken line is “Acorn, our new friend has returned. Welcome back.” A Leave option is offered, and the action bar carries Speed Up alongside Navigate Options, Scroll, Show tooltip and Choose dialogue option.

Several details are worth drawing out. Basilton is a golem, not one of the nature spirit types Mudtek lists for Forest Kings — which is consistent with the lore’s “or stranger powers still” escape clause, but does not prove anything. The dialogue addresses the player as “our new friend” and says they have returned, implying a prior meeting and an established relationship rather than a first encounter.
The presence of a Leave option and a Speed Up control confirms this is a standard conversation interface rather than a cutscene, and the dialogue itself — a golem calling someone “Acorn” — suggests a level of personality that the region’s hostile framing would not predict.
We describe the screen as read. We do not claim Basilton is a Forest King, a boss, or a quest-giver, because the screenshot does not say any of those things.
What the forest gives you
The Wildwood is a resource region as well as a story one, and one material is confirmed by name.

An official screenshot's quest tracker gives the objective on two lines. The title line reads “MAINTAINING THE DEFENSES”, and the line beneath it reads “Deliver 5 Wildwood Pine and 5”, with the remainder cut off by the panel edge.

Wildwood Pine is therefore a gatherable material, and the objective asks for five of them alongside a second material of five. The quest name Maintaining the Defenses implies a construction or repair task, though the full objective is not legible and we do not guess the second item.
The camp screenshot shows felled timber and stacked logs among the production structures, which is consistent with a wood material flowing from the forest into the settlement. That connection is visual rather than stated, and we present it as such.
Mudtek’s art director also frames the Wildwood as the place where the environment work is most granular: “from the smallest blade of grass in the Wildwood Forest to the colossal statues of the Old Ones”. It is the region the art team names when describing attention to detail at the smallest scale.
What is missing
Note Not published
Not published: how many Forest Kings exist, their names, their domains, the Wildwood's layout or coordinates, how the expansion changed the region, whether Basilton is recruitable, and what the Goblin Caves' relationship to the forest is.
We also do not publish a map of the Wildwood. No coordinate source exists, and an approximate map is worse than none when the region is divided into unnamed domains.

The forest’s role in Act 1
The Wildwood exists in deliberate tension with Earlwood Village, and Mudtek frames the relationship as a fading understanding.
Official Devlog, 13 June 2025
“The balance between the Wildwood and Earlwood Village is delicate. In ages past, the elders of Earlwood understood the forest's ways, maintaining an uneasy accord. Now, that knowledge is fading — known only to a dwindling few, while the forest remembers far more than men do.”
Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 13 June 2025
That gives the forest a motive that is cultural rather than monstrous. You are not clearing a hostile woodland; you are entering a place whose rules were once respected and are now forgotten. The line “the forest remembers far more than men do” frames the Wildwood as the party with the longer memory — and by implication, the stronger claim.
For the village on the forest’s border, see the Earlwood page. For the bosses reachable through it, see the bosses page. For the world the region belongs to, see the world and regions page.
