Short answer: corruption is spreading across Mirkea. Sylbos, Last of the Ogre Magi, seeks to claim Dimraeth and the power beneath it. A broken ritual grants you immortality by accident, and the wizard Faustas recruits you to stand with Mirkea's free peoples against Sylbos and the dark gods.
The premise in Mudtek’s own words
The store page opens the story with a section titled The Shadow Over Mirkea, and it is the most complete official summary that exists.
Official Steam store page
“Corruption spreads across Mirkea. Sylbos, Last of the Ogre Magi, seeks to claim Dimraeth and the power upon which it stands. By a twist of fate, you are granted an ancient power you do not understand. The venerable wizard Faustas recruits you to stand with Mirkea's free peoples against Sylbos and the dark gods.”

Five facts are established there, and they are worth separating because so much third-party coverage blurs them.
| Element | What the store page establishes |
|---|---|
| Mirkea | The world, currently being corrupted |
| Dimraeth | Something Sylbos wants to claim, with power bound to it |
| Sylbos | An Ogre Magus, described as the last of them |
| Your power | Ancient, granted by accident, not understood by you |
| Faustas | A wizard who recruits you into the resistance |
| The dark gods | A separate antagonistic force behind Sylbos |
The phrase “and the power upon which it stands” is deliberately vague, and Mudtek has not explained it further. Whether Dimraeth is a place, an artefact or a god is not stated. We record the ambiguity rather than resolving it.
Note also that the dark gods are listed separately from Sylbos. Sylbos is the immediate threat; the dark gods are the larger frame. That is the structure the store page presents, and no official source has detailed how the two relate.
The player’s situation
The official website frames the same story from the player’s side, and it adds a detail the store page omits.
Official Official website
“Awaken in a world on the edge of ruin. Gifted with immortality by a broken ritual, you must uncover ancient secrets, rally allies, and stand against the darkness spreading beneath Dimraeth. Your choices will shape the fate of Mirkea and your own.”
“A Co-op RPG Where You Forge Power, Build Home, and Fight for a Dying World.”

Immortality by a broken ritual is the key addition. The store page says you receive “an ancient power you do not understand”; the website specifies what that power is. A ritual that failed and left you unable to die is a specific hook, and it explains the framing of the game’s tagline — you are fighting for a dying world from a position of personal permanence.
The website’s marketing line also lays out the game’s three pillars in order: forge power, build home, fight for a dying world. That ordering matches how the systems are presented elsewhere, with character progression and settlement building sharing equal billing with the conflict.
Where the story takes place
The setting has a defined political geography, and Mudtek’s Earlwood devlog is the source for most of it.
Official Devlog, 13 June 2025
“Earlwood is unlike many places in Mirkea. It stands on the border between the Human Kingdom of Aldoria and the vast Eternal Forest, home of the elves.”
“Most of Mirkea remains divided along ancient lines. Earlwood stands apart. Here, for a time, those divisions have faded.”
Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 13 June 2025
| Place | Type | Confirmed detail |
|---|---|---|
| Mirkea | The world | Corruption spreads across it |
| Aldoria | Human kingdom | Bordering the Eternal Forest; has a Great City |
| The Eternal Forest | Elven homeland | Vast; neighbours the Wildwood |
| The Wildwood | Fractured forest | Not ruled by Elves or Aldoria |
| Earlwood Peninsula | Coastal region | Location of the starting village |
| The Old Ones | Colossal statues | Referenced by the art director as a subject of environmental work |
That last entry comes from a different official source and is easy to miss. The art director’s post of 21 August 2025 describes the environment work as spanning “from the smallest blade of grass in the Wildwood Forest to the colossal statues of the Old Ones”. It is a single passing reference, but it is the only official mention of the Old Ones, and it implies a prior civilisation whose ruins are part of the landscape.
The Wildwood’s own law
One piece of lore has direct gameplay implications, and it concerns who rules the forest.
Official Devlog, 13 June 2025
“Here, each stretch of forest is its own domain. The Wildwood is a fractured land of many small kingdoms, each ruled by a Forest King — ancient spirits of nature, be they Dryads, Treants, or stranger powers still. Though divided, they are bound by one law: the will of Ceres, the nature god whose laws shape all life beneath the canopy.”
Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 13 June 2025
Two things follow. First, “Forest King” is a title held by multiple entities rather than a single character, which matters when the achievement list names Aelwynor under the achievement The Hart of the Forest. Second, the Wildwood is politically fragmented — a patchwork of domains under a common law rather than one territory.
Ceres is the only deity named in any official source. The devlog calls her “the nature god whose laws shape all life beneath the canopy”, which is a scope claim rather than a flavour detail: the forest’s rules are hers, not any king’s.
The tone Mudtek is aiming for
The Earlwood devlog closes with a passage that says more about the intended feel than any feature list.
Official Devlog, 13 June 2025
“We wanted this first town to feel layered: warm and welcoming on the surface, but marked by deeper wounds beneath.”
“Fear has gripped the town. Most quarters are sealed. The guards allow no one through. But not all obey. The Guild Hall Quarter remains open. It serves both as a refuge for the displaced and the village's last hope of defense.”
“I'll leave you with this: a simple dusk in Earlwood. Smoke curling from chimneys. A small circle of children and squirrels gathered near old Befr, begging for one more story before nightfall. These are the moments worth protecting.”
Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 13 June 2025
The design tension is explicit: a cosy village that the player arrives to find already unravelling. The game director’s stated goal is that you should feel welcome and feel the crisis, which is why the Guild Hall Quarter is described as simultaneously a refuge and a last line of defence.
How much story exists right now
Act 1, in three chapters. That is the Early Access scope, stated plainly in the release announcement.
Official Release announcement, 15 September 2026
“Our act 1 story which develops over 3 chapters.”
Source: Mudtek Steam announcement, 15 September 2026
Because Early Access launched with only Act 1, the story is expected to continue in later updates. Mudtek’s published roadmap places further content after the Early Access launch, and the studio has said the level cap will rise with each new act — which is how the three-chapter structure connects to the progression system.
Note What is not published
Not published: what Dimraeth physically is, how many acts are planned in total, the identities of the dark gods, what Sylbos did before the game begins, and any ending for the story.
We also do not attribute any plot detail to the four bosses named in the achievement list beyond the achievement wording itself. Mudtek has not published their lore.

Reading the story through the quest list
The most reliable way to follow Act 1’s shape is the achievement list, because Mudtek’s own quest names are recorded there alongside completion rates.
| Quest (official name) | Achievement | Completion |
|---|---|---|
| The First Steps | A New Start | 100.0% |
| Time Tardy Scout | Help a Lost Elf | 90.1% |
| A Village in Crisis | Village Hero | 44.7% |
| The Corrupted Treant | Timber! | 13.9% |
| The Broken Bridge | River Crosser | 7.1% |
| Bread and Blood | Blood and Bread | 2.8% |
| Hoard King’s Fall | Death of a Tyrant | 1.1% |
| Opening the Throne Path | Corrupted Exploration | 0.3% |
| Crown of Thorns | Heavy is the Crown | 0.1% |
Sorted by completion rate, those nine names trace the main story in the order most players experience it. We describe the sequence as an ordering derived from completion data rather than as a confirmed chapter list — Mudtek has not published which chapter each quest belongs to, and we do not assign them.
The climb down from 100.0% to 0.1% is itself the story’s shape: the opening is universal, and the finale is reached by roughly one player in a thousand.
For the quests in full, see the quests page. For the places they happen in, see the world and regions page and the Earlwood and Wildwood pages. For the characters you meet along the way, see the romance and NPCs page.
